Lovin’ Letterpress

Two months ago I started taking a Letterpress class at the Genesee Center for the Arts here in Rochester. This is an intro class so our projects are already outlined by our instructor, Mitch Cohen, who is a lot of fun to work with.

Our projects were mainly exercises for us to learn our way around a California job case, pre-press basics, and press operation.

I’ve walked away with two projects that I’m somewhat proud of (I loved seeing all my work finally come down to ink on paper). One is the horizontal bookmark I came up with, “you are here”.

The second is a typeface display poster. We could do an alphabet or any combination of words, as long as all the letters of the typeface were represented. I kept it simple and stuck with the alphabet, but used a large wood block set of letters to better fill the space we had to work with.

I’m pretty happy with what I’ve taken away from this class, and I’m taking their follow up class, “Lovin’ Letterpress II” this August.
